A Great Place to Live and Work
Covering a geographic area of 1.7 square miles, the town of Powhatan Point is located in the southeastern Belmont County, Ohio, about 14 miles south of Wheeling. WV. on the Ohio River. It is an established community formed in 1849. While "Powhatan" likely memorializes the Native-American tribe of the same name, the "Point" in the town's name refers to the confluence between the Captina Creek and the Ohio River. Powhatan Point is a riverfront community along the scenic State Route 7 of the Ohio River.
Community offers an attractive family and retirement residential environment with modern schools, community center, and parks.Under transformation plan the riverfront downtown is undergoing a smart growth mixed use development for retail, office, and condos with a cultural arts focus. Hotel-Conference Center and riverfront whaft-boat landings and road-pedestrain ways augment the plan.
History
First surveyed in 1849, Powhatan Point was laid out by Franklin Knox. The small but thriving river and farming community served York Township and the rich Captina Valley as a shipping center for its first 75 years. Given impetus by the construction of the Powhatan Enterprise Flouring Mill and Woolen Factory in 1850, local businesses shipped grain, fruit, lumber, cheese, whiskey, livestock, wool and tobacco to northern and southern ports. There were three boat landings: Boger's Hornbrook's and Dorsey's each equipped with an incline car track from the warehouses to the river's edge. With the opening of North American Coal Corporation's Powhatan No: 1 Mine in 1922, the Village became a mining community that continued to rely on the river. A disastrous mine fire took the lives of 66 men on July 5, 1944 (AL06802). |
